The first mention of public education in Dartmouth can be found in the town meeting records of July 7, 1702. The first high school students mentioned during the late eighteen hundreds were tuition students at New Bedford High School. In 1903, the Bush Street School, presently the Administration Building for the Dartmouth Public Schools, was built to house the first Dartmouth High School class. In 1927, the high school was moved to the building that now houses the Town Hall. In 1956, the main portion of what is now the middle school was built and the first addition to it was completed in 1960. This was followed by another addition in 1981. Today, the high school is located on Bakerville Road in South Dartmouth. In 1985, the U.S. Department of Education awarded Dartmouth High School a national Flag of Excellence.

The Cushman School just experienced a fun event for our families at our Literacy Night. We were so pleased to see such a wonderful crowd. The smiles on our students’ faces showed that they enjoyed it. Thank you to our tremendous group of teachers who planned the activities for our families! Our bookfair was a success and we will be planning another one at the end of the year during Field Day like we did last year! Speaking of Field Day, I know that many families love knowing about those important dates as far in advance as possible, so here are just a few: two remaining early release days include Wednesday, April 5 and Wednesday, May 10; April Break will run from April 17-April 21; our District Art Show will be held on May 11; our PBIS celebration for students will be on May 31 with the Toe Jam Puppet Band sponsored by our amazing PTO; Field Day will be on Thursday, June 1 with a raindate of Thursday, June 8th. Our last school day is on Wednesday, June 14th.
